Pat's Stack and Whack Quilt

Pat's Stack and Whack quilt with 'Popcorn' digital quilt pattern.

When I am working in my Longarm Quilting studio in the Spring and Summer, the light comes through the window, highlighting the quilt pattern of the quilt I am stitching.  At these moments I sometimes manage to take a photo, like this one of Pat's lovely quilt.  It is a Stack and Whack pattern which uses some of Pat's lovely floral fabrics

An allover digital quilting design done on a longarm quilting machine is a great way to finish a quilt with an irregular pattern, like a Stack and Whack quilt.  The quilt pattern she chose was 'Popcorn' by Clothwerx for Willow Leaf Studio.  It is a popular design and always looks delightful once quilted.

People's Choice Winner - British Quilt & Stitch Village 2018 - Nearly Insane Quilt by Frances Meredith

People's Choice Winner
British Quilt & Stitch Village 2018
Nearly Insane Quilt by Frances Meredith
My Nearly Insane quilt has been out and about again, this time to the British Quilt & Stitch Village 2018 at Uttoxeter, UK.  I had a call on Friday to say that it had won second place in the Traditional Quilt Category and I was over the moon.  I headed up there on Sunday to pick up the quilt and attended the prize-giving, only to discover that I had won the People's Choice Award, based on the vote of those who had attended the show. Along with a silver platter and a cash prize I also received a copy of a book on the history of the needle industry.
Thanks to everyone who voted for me!

Making a quilt for man? Charm Square Quilt made by Elaine

Making a quilt for man?
Charm Square Quilt made by Elaine
Have you ever struggled to make a quilt for a man?  Elaine has made this great quilt for a male family member, using up her charm square scraps and a great denim coloured sashing.

Amongst my digital quilt design library, which you can view on Pinterest, I have an ever growing selection of designs which are simple, modern and great for a wide range of quilt styles.  For Elaine's quilt, we chose a simple, but graphic 'Diagonal Plaid' pattern which gives an overall look of crosshatch quilting.

The overall size of the quit was 62" x 78", with Hobbs wadding and stitched with a Persian Blue Glide thread.

Sometimes the simplest quilt patterns can produce the most spectacular results when quilted with a digital pantograph.  I think it is partly because it offers a relatively blank canvas in which to introduce a new dimension of character.  Elaine made this quilt for a family member - wow, what a lovley gift!

Here is a close-up of the quilting on the purple squares.  I used a Warm Grey 4 Glide thread, which is a colour I use a lot on customer quilts as it blends so well with lots of colours.  Elaine purchased some Hobbs 80/20 wadding from Fabadashery Longarm Quilting, along with the grey circle backing fabric, which was a great match with the front of the quilt.

'Sisters Choice' Quilt, made by Hazel, quilted by Fabadashery Longarm Quilting

'Sisters Choice' Quilt Block, Made by Hazel
'Sisters Choice' Quilt Block, Made by Hazel
Do you have any UFO's in your cupboard?  Hazel had made this huge quilt featuring the Sister's Choice quilt block, several years ago and had even started to hand quilt it.  At 92" x 106" it was going to be a mamouth task.  However, the arrival of a new bed prompted her to pull it out of the cupboard and to seek help from Fabadashery Longarm Quilting to get it finished.

Within a few days I had quilted the quilt top for her and added the binding, allowing her to add the finishing touches of hand sewing down the binding and putting it on the new bed.

To go with the traditional style of her home, Hazel chose the 'Paisley Feathers' digital pantograph, stitched in a warm soft green thread, German Granite by Glide.

It is great to be able to help out!

Baby Duck Quilt made by Dilys, quilted by Fabadashery Longarm Quilting

Baby Duck Quilt, made by Dilys,
quilted by Frances Meredith at Fabadashery Longarm Quilting
This is a quilt I quilted for Dilys several months ago, so I expect the recipient has already received it and hopefully had good fun using it.

Dilys chose a simple pattern to go all over the quilt, 'Happy Times', a pattern which had the look of water, so the chicks look as if they are bobbing up and down!

Half Square Triangle Quilt made by Sherry - quilted by Fabadashery Longarm Quilting

Half Square Triangle Quilt made by Sherry
quilted by Fabadashery Longarm Quilting
I love making half square triangle quilts and so I was delighted to see Sherry bring along this modern take on the HST.  It really shows how a choice selection of fabrics can be combined to make a stunning quilt.  It was just one of three quilts which she brought to me for longarm quilting last summer, which were destined for her grandchildren who live the other side of the world.

We had fun choosing the quilt patterns and thread colours for each and for this particular one we chose a bright neon orange thread. I have posted a short video of this quilt being stitched out on my Facebook page and you can view it at the very bottom of this blog.  The LED setting on my longarm machine highlighted the fluorescence of the thread and looked AMAZING!  On the rare occasion that the quilt is under the same particular lighting, the dragonflies should glow, but otherwise it will just look like ordinary orange thread.

Here is another Fancy Fox quilt that was made in good time as a gift for a new born, even though the baby decided to arrive early at Christmas time!  It is such a great pattern for kids and a great way to showcase a range of fun fabrics.  Sophie (and her Mum) made this out of a great selection of fabrics

For the digital quilting pattern we used one of the popular patterns of 2017, 'Nightlight' by Patricia  E Ritter and Marybeth O'Halloran. This is such a popular quilt pattern that I expect to see lots more Fancy Foxes in the future!

There is always a sense of satisfaction when you take a custom quilt off the frame.  After working on it in sections, all you want to do is view it in its full glory.  This was the case for this lovely quilt made by Pauline.

The quilt was stitched in the ditch around each block and then I filled the 'white space' with feathers and other decorative fillers.

I think Pauline was hoping to add the binding and exhibit it in the Severn Valley Quilters Exhibition which is being held this weekend in Thornbury, UK.  I can't wait to see it again.

Garden Notes quilt made by Carys, quilted by Fabadashery Long Arm Quilting

Garden Notes Layer Cake quilt, made by Carys
I have recently quilted this pretty quilt for Carys.  I think it is a layer cake pattern and Carys used a really lovely fabric range called 'Garden Notes' by Kathy Schmidt.  I have been on the web to see if I can get hold of it, as I thought it was so pretty, but without much luck.

The prints on the fabric are quite delicate so when choosing a quilt pattern, we went with something which would compliment the style. We chose 'Blooms', a digital pantograph pattern by Anne Bright which had fine lines and a floral style.  The photo below shows how it stitched out on the back of the quilt.

'Trip Around the World' quilt made by Margie in Kaffe Fassett fabrics,
quilted by Fabadashery Long Arm Quilting
I can't tell you how pleased I was to see this quilt arrive at my door for quilting - yes, it is one of those Kaffe Fassett lovelies that bring a smile to your face when you see it.  Margie is one my postal customers and when you receive a quilt top through the post it is like Christmas Day!  It is a Trip Around the World quilt pattern, with a fussy cut Kaffe Fassett border.  The lime green border and binding finish it off perfectly.

I think many of us are drawn to Kaffe Fassett fabrics because of the vibrant colours and it is usually really hard for the quilt pattern to compete, so this simple Bam! digital pantograph does a great job of making a fabulous quilt top into a fabulous quilt.

Just in case there was a shortage of Kaffe Fassett fabric on the front, Margie bought this Kaffe Fassett extra wide print 'Circles' for the back.  I love it.  If you would like your quilt finished by Fabadashery Long Arm Quilting, but feel you are too far away, I am happy for you to post your quilt top.  Just get in contact with a photo via email and we can discuss it from there.
Happy Quilting!

French General Star Quilt made by Marlene, quilted by Fabadashery Long Arm Quilting

Nemesh Feathers digital pantograph by Bethan Nemesh
Recently, I have been using one the new digital quilting patterns which I have added to my collection, Nemesh Feathers.  Here it is being stitched out for the first time with its lovely feathers and swirls.  I am quilting it onto a quilt made by Marlene which features lots of French General fabrics and I think this particular quilt pattern suits it perfectly.

If you are wondering what sort of pattterns I have available, you can scroll through the posts on this website or visit my Pinterest page where I keep them in a folder together.  There is something to suit everyone's taste.

Do you love cats?  Penny has made this lovely cat quilt out of some brightly coloured Laurel Burch  fabric.  It is a 10" square Layer Cake pattern.  If you want a cat quilt of your own, you can find the Pins and Paws Quilt Tutorial on the Missouri Star YouTube channel

Because the digital quilting patterns are computerised, it means that Penny could choose how large the size of the pattern was on her quilt.  With this Ginger Stars pattern, she wanted the stars quite close together, so I reduced the size of the pattern before I started, so that a couple of stars popped up in each block.

Penny loves her bright colours and on the back there she chose a bright orange fabric, which after quilting was dotted with pretty stars.

If you have picked up the February 2018 edition of British Patchwork and Quilting, you may have seen an article about me and my quilting. It features my first bed quilt, my Butterfly Quilt which you can find out more about on my blog, as well as my latest completed project, my Nearly Insane quilt.  It was interesting to look back and see my journey towards becoming a professional long arm quilter.

Foundation by the Yard Scrap Quilt by Penny

'Foundation by the Yard' scrap quilt by Penny

It's cold outside, so here is a photo of a nice cheerful, cosy quilt made by Penny.  The colourful scrappy foundation blocks are pieced using pre-printed 'Foundation by the Yard' interfacing, which allows quick results.  The black sashing really sets the colourful blocks off to their best.  Penny also brought along her binding for me to add, which was a snazzy multi-coloured stripy fabric.

For this quilt Penny chose an all over digital pattern called 'Ginger Hearts'.  This is one of my most popular patterns and it always stitches out beautifully.
